Every Costume Has a Story. Are You Capturing It?

October 26, 2026•5 min read

As we approach the final few days before Halloween, the costumes are starting to come out, and the creativity on display can be pretty incredible.

The costumes run the gamut from a simple T-shirt that says "This Is My Costume" to elaborate, fully immersive creations that could rival some of Hollywood's best work. Some people spend months planning every detail, while others pull something together at the last minute. And, of course, some of us choose not to participate in the celebration at all.

However you choose to celebrate Halloween, one of the things I love most about this time of year is seeing the joy, imagination, and creativity people bring to it.

Some people create their own original characters. Others become someone they admire, bringing a favorite character to life in their own way. Some mix and match characters to create a hybrid that nobody has ever seen before. And then there are those who use Halloween as an opportunity to showcase their sense of humor, giving everyone around them a good laugh.

Every costume has a story behind it. As photographers, we have an opportunity to help tell that story.

One of the simplest things you can do is take a moment to appreciate the creativity of the people around you. If you see a costume that catches your eye, ask the person if they'd be comfortable with you taking a photograph. You might discover that they've put a tremendous amount of thought into their creation, and they'll be delighted to have someone appreciate their work.

Just remember that asking permission is important, particularly when you're photographing strangers. And if someone agrees, take it as an opportunity to help them look their best.

Don't settle for a quick snapshot if you have the chance to create something more memorable.

Start with a full body photograph that shows off the entire costume. Look at the environment around your subject and consider how it might help tell the story. If they're dressed as a mysterious character, perhaps a darker background or dramatic lighting would help create the right atmosphere. If their costume is colorful and playful, look for a setting that complements that personality.

Then move in closer.

A headshot can reveal details that might be missed in a wider photograph. The makeup, the expression, the accessories, and especially the eyes can all help bring the character to life. Even when someone is wearing a mask or elaborate face paint, their eyes can be an important part of communicating personality and emotion.

When you're composing your photograph, pay attention to where you're focusing. If you're using a shallow depth of field, make sure the important details, especially the eyes when they're visible, are sharp. Letting the background fall out of focus can help separate your subject from a busy environment and draw attention to the costume.

But don't assume that a blurry background is always the answer. Try photographing the person with more of the environment in focus, too. Sometimes the setting is an essential part of the story, and showing those surroundings can help viewers understand the world your subject is trying to create.

Props can also make a big difference. A wand, a hat, a sword, or some other carefully chosen accessory can help sell the illusion. Encourage your subject to interact with the props rather than simply holding them for the camera. A natural pose can make the photograph feel much more convincing.

And don't forget to experiment with lighting.

Halloween gives us a wonderful excuse to play with light and shadow. Try positioning your subject near a light source, look for interesting colored lighting, or see what happens when part of the costume falls into shadow. You might discover that a small change in your position transforms an ordinary portrait into something much more dramatic.

You don't need professional lighting equipment to experiment with these ideas. Theme parks often provide colorful, theatrical lighting during Halloween events, while neighborhood decorations can offer interesting opportunities right outside your door.

In fact, some of the most memorable Halloween portraits might happen in your own neighborhood, with friends who are excited to show off the costumes they've worked so hard to create.

The important thing is to focus on the illusion your subject wants to create and think about how your photograph can support it.

Are they trying to look mysterious? Playful? Intimidating? Ridiculous? Heroic? Help them bring that personality into the photograph through their pose, expression, surroundings, and the way you use your camera.

You don't have to be a professional portrait photographer to do this. You simply need to be curious, willing to experiment, and interested in helping someone share their creativity with the world.

And above all, have fun with it!

Halloween is a chance to step outside the ordinary, try something different, and celebrate the imagination of the people around us. Whether you're photographing a friend in an elaborate costume, capturing a clever neighborhood creation, or taking a portrait of someone who has transformed themselves into a favorite character, you're helping preserve more than just an outfit.

You're preserving the personality, the effort, the humor, and the excitement that went into creating it.

Years from now, those photographs might bring back memories of a costume someone spent months making, a character they loved embodying, or a Halloween celebration shared with friends.

That's what makes these photographs worth taking. They capture a moment when someone chose to express themselves in a creative way, and you took the time to appreciate it.

So, as Halloween approaches, keep your eyes open for those wonderful costumes and the stories behind them. Ask permission, experiment with different compositions, play with light and shadow, and give your subjects a chance to shine.

You might be surprised by the photographs you create when you look beyond the costume and start capturing the character.

I'd love to see what you're photographing this Halloween season! Come join us in the Fairy Tale Photo Academy community on Skool, where you can share your Halloween portraits, show off the creative costumes you've captured, and tell us the stories behind your favorite photographs.

Let's celebrate the creativity around us, learn from one another, and keep finding new ways to capture a little extra magic through photography.
