A family of Ducks acting like tourists ahead of Rope Drop at Disneyland

Ducks Before Dole Whip: Photographing the Funny Side of Theme Parks

August 18, 20252 min read

When you head to a theme park, you may stumble into unexpected moments of humor — the kind that, if you aren’t ready with your camera, disappear forever.

One of my favorite examples happened early one morning at Disneyland. I had staked out a front-row spot for rope drop in front of Adventureland. As the crowd began to swell behind us, a group of ducks casually waddled past the rope as if they were Donald Duck’s VIP guests. Like a little family on vacation, they marched confidently under the Adventureland archway and disappeared around the corner.

The crowd that witnessed it burst into cheers. It was adorable. It was unexpected. And because I was ready with my camera, I captured a moment that felt like pure magic.

And here’s the thing: it doesn’t always have to be wildlife that delivers these funny surprises. Your friends, family, or even complete strangers can be a goldmine of humor. Sure, posed photos are fun, but often it’s the candid, unplanned shots that become the real treasures of a theme park trip. A goofy expression, a yawn caught mid-frame, or the look of surprise when someone gets splashed — these are the memories that turn into family legends and inside jokes for years to come.

Tips for Capturing Candid Theme Park Magic

  • Keep your camera ready. Funny moments don’t wait. Have your phone or camera set to quick-launch so you can capture in an instant.

  • Anticipate the laugh. If you know a jump-scare, water splash, or goofy moment is about to happen, frame your shot early and be ready to click.

  • Use burst mode. Multiple shots in a row increase your odds of catching the perfect expression.

  • Step back. Sometimes you capture more natural candids by zooming in from a distance rather than being right in your subject’s face.

  • Tell the story. Candid photos often work best when they’re part of a sequence — show the buildup, the moment, and the aftermath.

  • Embrace imperfection. Blurs, odd angles, or cut-off frames can actually add charm to a funny memory.

Theme parks are packed with big thrills, but it’s often the small, unplanned, funny moments that we remember most. Whether it’s ducks “rope-dropping” Adventureland or your loved one making the perfect surprised face on a ride, these are the photos that will make you smile long after the trip is over.
