Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Featuring Aerosmith

Aerosmith Out Muppets On the Way In for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Retheme at Walt Disney World

March 02, 20263 min read

The day many Aerosmith fans have been dreading has finally arrived. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Walt Disney World has officially closed its doors at Disney's Hollywood Studios. For years, guests blasted off in a super stretch limo to the sound of Aerosmith, and for many, that launch countdown was a core memory.

The emotion feels familiar. We just watched devoted fans line up one last time to say goodbye to Muppet Vision 3D. That farewell carried real weight. Today carries a similar tone for those who loved rocking out upside down to their favorite Aerosmith tracks.

The big difference is that this coaster is not going away. It is transforming. Aerosmith is stepping aside, and the Muppets are stepping in.

Disney has already been quietly preparing for the shift. The preshow recording studio setting had been closed off for a couple months, likely to speed up the conversion and target a summer reopening. If you have followed Disney rethemes before, this approach feels familiar. On the West Coast, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror eventually became Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, with exterior changes started before the closure of the ride itself. This did help minimize the downtime to 5 months. And the following year California Screamin' closed for a major overhaul before returning 6 months later as Incredicoaster, its track repainted and the scream tubes closed in to accomodate the story being completely reimagined.

Major coaster rethemes are not new. But that does not make them easy.

I genuinely feel for Aerosmith fans. It is never fun to lose something you love in a theme park. Attractions are not just rides. They are soundtracks to specific seasons of life. They anchor trips with friends. They bring back the feeling of that first launch into the dark.

As a Muppet fan, I am relieved the Muppets will continue to have a presence in the park. Still, if I am being honest, I would have preferred to keep MuppetVision 3D and let the coaster remain Aerosmith themed. When I experienced this coaster back in 2014, it was not at the top of my list, not because of Aerosmith, but because of the coaster itself. Now, thanks to the Muppets, I will absolutely make time for it on my next visit despite not being a big fan of the ride experience.

I am also curious what elements might carry over. Will any of the animatronic Muppets from MuppetVision 3D find a new home inside the coaster experience? If most of them do, that may quietly signal that hopes for a revival of the former theater show near the coaster are slim. Right now that space houses a Villains themed production. Time will tell once the coaster reopens this summer.

For those mourning the Aerosmith version, there are small ways to keep it alive. I have been known to pop in earbuds on the Incredicoaster and sync up the old California Screamin' soundtrack for nostalgia. It is not exactly the same, but it keeps the spirit of the original experience close. There is nothing stopping fans from doing the same with Aerosmith tracks on future rides.

While indoor roller coasters in the dark are not the easiest attractions to photograph, there is still plenty worth capturing. The exterior, the marquee, the queue details, the launch area.
